Lisa works from a studio housed in a former apple-packing shed which dates from a time when the surrounding area was planted extensively with apple orchards. Lisa's pieces are made from porcelain clay and sealed inside with a clear glaze. Coloured designs are hand-painted on to the inside of a mould before it is filled with porcelain slip. This process results in each piece being unique - a permanent record of an individual expressive action. When the design is complete and the piece is leather hard it is carefully removed from the mould and fettled. It is then left to dry completely then bisque fired before being glazed on the inside and fired again to 1300 deg. The surface is finally polished with wet & dry paper which enhances the translucent glass like appearance of the porcelain. The clay is vitrified which makes it strong and leak proof. Jackie works from her Gravelly Beach studio, where she focuses on blue and white ceramic wares. Blue oxide designs are inlaid into white clay. The clay is then rolled, compressed and formed into final works.
